Letchmi Estate is situated in the south-west part of the beautiful Kanan Devan Hills. This part of the district receives high rainfall and occassional frost during the winter. The average annual rainfall for the Letchmi sections is around 190 inches while for the Sevenmallay sections it is 160 inches.

On amalgamation of Letchmi Estate with Sevenmallay on 1st April 2005 the estate tea area is 1098.63 ha. The total area of the estate is 2071.04 ha. consisting of tea, energy plantation, jungle and other area in Viriparai division, which was opened in 1991. The clones used for planting in Viriparai are TRI 2025, UPASI - 9, UPASI - 3, CRA 6017/UPASI - 9 cleft graft clone, Clone UPASI 3/ UPASI 9 cleft graft clone, TTL 1 and TTL2.

Letchmi estate took its name from the Godess Letchmi and Sevenmallay divisions name is attributed to the Hindu God Sivan and 'malley' denoting a hill which with the passage of time and usage got designated as Sevenmallay.


Parvithy division of this estate was opened in the year 1900 by a pioneer planter, Mr. A.H. Sharp, which was one of the first areas to be planted with tea in the High Ranges. The factory in Sevenmallay that had undertaken Leggcut manufacture, was closed down in 1992.The Letchmi factory was established in 1902 and presently manufactures premium CTC teas.

The elephant lake which is a man made lake is situated in Letchmi estate and besides being a prime spot for trout fishing is also a watering hole for innumberable wild life, including Tigers.

The record yield was achieved in the year 1997/98 with Sevenmallay divisions yielding 3118 kgs per ha while Letchmi divisions yielded 2962 kgs per ha.
